Netflix is establishing a new game studio in Los Angeles, and according to its advertisements, a mobile game does not seem to be coming this time. It is run by Chacko Sonny, who worked as executive producer for the Overwatch event. Director and engineer positions also included an analyst for live service games. Their project is described as “brand new AAA computer game”.
Today, players do not like to hear the term live service, but it cannot be denied that a number of hits, especially Fortnite or League of Legends, work successfully on this model. Netflix’s new product will be built on the Unreal Engine and is described in one of the advertisements as an action RPG with a third-person perspective. It is also likely to be a free-to-play game.
The speculation is that Netflix wants to create a brand strong enough to work on as part of movies and series. At the same time, it would make more sense for us if they used one of the well-established brands. They have several in their portfolio, and fans can certainly imagine one big game from more than one Netflix universe. We will see the result in a few years as we are still looking for team members. For now, we’ll have to make do with the games in the mobile app.
