The Grand Theft Auto series has been at the top of the desires and preferences of video game enthusiasts since 1997. But how many GTA chapters have there been so far, what is the correct release order and how are they arranged chronologically according to their internal history?
As can be seen from the order of releases, it takes more and more time to produce new GTAs: only a year passed between III and Vice City, and San Andreas came out only two years later. Conversely, GTA V came out five years after IV and we’ve been waiting for GTA 6 for ten years now.
We still don’t know when the sixth chapter will be available, so the wait could be a while yet. Meanwhile, there are many different ways to organize the chapters of the Grand Theft Auto saga, based on what “filter” you have in mind.
GTA: Chapter Chapter Release Order —
Probably the most obvious list of the lot, but if you want to determine when the Grand Theft Auto series was born or the release year of each chapter, here’s what you’re served:
- Grand Theft Auto – 1997
- Grand Theft Auto 2 – 1999
- Grand Theft Auto III – 2001
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – 2002
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – 2004
- Grand Theft Auto IV – 2008
- Grand Theft Auto V – 2013
Chronological Order of Major Chapters —
And this is instead how the different chapters of the main franchise are arranged based on when they are set:
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – 1986
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – 1992
- Grand Theft Auto – 1997
- Grand Theft Auto III – 2001
- Grand Theft Auto IV – 2008
- Grand Theft Auto V – 2013
We still don’t know when GTA 6 will be set, but while there are rumors of a return to Vice City, it’s possible that it’s just the release year.
All GTA in release order —
Instead, this is the release order of all GTA, including expansions and non-chapters, as released on portable consoles:
- Grand Theft Auto – 1997 (Main)
- Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 – 1999 (expansion)
- Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 – 1999 (expansion)
- Grand Theft Auto 2 – 1999 (main)
- Grand Theft Auto III – 2001 (main)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – 2002 (main)
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – 2004 (main)
- Grand Theft Auto Advance – 2004 (portable)
- Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – 2005 (portable)
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories – 2006 (portable)
- Grand Theft Auto IV – 2008 (main)
- Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars – 2009 (portable)
- Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned – 2009 (expansion)
- Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony – 2009 (expansion)
- Grand Theft Auto V – 2013 (Main)
Remasters and Collections —
Finally, these are the Grand Theft Auto themed remasters and collections that have been released over the years:
- Grand Theft Auto: Director’s Cut – 1999
- Grand Theft Auto: The Classics Collection – 2003
- Grand Theft Auto: Double Packs – 2003
- Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – 2005
- Grand Theft Auto: Double Packs – 2005
- Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City – 2009
- Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition – 2010
- Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition – 2021
In this case, things haven’t always gone well, as with the Definitive Edition of the original trilogy, which sparked much discussion less than two years ago due to the quality of the remastering and the many issues encountered at launch.
