A new game in the Lord of the Rings franchise had one of the worst point averages ever for a triple-A game. The title, co-published by Nacon and Daedalic (who also handled development), turned out to be the worst-rated game of those released in 2023. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was originally announced in 2019, for a release in 2021, but then it was delayed twice, which actually made you a bit suspicious.
The Lord of the Rings flop: Gollum —
Fans were excited about the imminent release of a new Lord of the Rings video game, but the release turned out to be a total disappointment. The PS5 version currently has an average rating of 38/100 on review aggregator Metacritic. The Lord of the Rings reviews rarely gave a score higher than 50, with most noting massive technical issues with the game. We’ve Got This Covered gives Gollum a 4/10, explaining that “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has the spirit of good ideas spread throughout the game, but they’re unfortunately hampered by dated graphics. Cumbersome and clumsy operation; endless bugs, glitches and crashes [nonché] gaming gimmicks that do not live up to their lofty ambitions”.
2 on report —
Still, this is one of the game’s more benevolent reviews. Despite being based on a very popular IP address, technical shortcomings and frustrating gameplay were better (or worse). Gfinity simply writes, “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, like the title character, is ugly, disfigured and buggy.” The site only gave Gollum a 2/10, but he wasn’t the only one to rate it so low. GameSpot was one of the strictest, writing: “Like Gollum’s quest for the One Ring, my quest to complete The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was filled with endless misadventures, impossible odds, and challenging levels of ever-higher madness. And, like Gollum, my journey was doomed from the start.” suffer, then at least they succeeded.”
The exception –
The PC version got a slightly higher 43 point average, but the reviews have many of the same complaints. In a year with so many surprise releases, it certainly seems that Gollum is one to skip.
