Forza Motorsport has learned some lessons from Forza Horizon and also from other first-party developers at Microsoft, such as the team behind Starfield, Bethesda Game Studios. That’s according to Turn 10 Studios general manager Dan Greenawalt, who revealed it by answering a question from us during a Q&A with the press.
Forza Horizon’s influence is quite evident when you start playing the racing career mode, called Builders Cup. The mode starts with an “initial drive” that aims to welcome you into the game and familiarize you with the controls, just as Playground Games has done. provided the starting time of his games over the years.
“Yes, Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport, in a way we are sister studios, Playground and Turn 10, and we share a lot of people. We share many ideas. We use one engine, the Forza Tech engine, so there is a lot of technology blended together,” Greenawalt told us.
Where does the ‘initial drive’ come from –
“The idea of having what we call a starter experience or an initial experience and quickly providing players with end-level content, that’s kind of what it’s like. Many games do this, so you see it everywhere. This is an aspect that we have already adopted in Forza Motorsport 3 and then 4 and then Horizon. We made live-action videos. We went on some exciting rides. We did some chill laps. And in Forza Motorsport 7 we had to get into the truck and then switch between cars while taking control of other drivers in our game, such as M. Rossi. So it’s something that has evolved over time.”
Turn 10’s general manager also underlined how collaboration between all of Microsoft’s first-party studios, not just Xbox Game Studios, and not just for the same genres, was fundamental during the work on Forza Motorsport.
Starfield’s hand –
“I think the strength of these teams is that we work together a lot in many areas, including technology, and we don’t tend to refer only to our gender. We tend to have very broad horizons as part of the first-party family,” Greenawalt said. And this process also involved Starfield’s developer, Bethesda Game Studios.
“We can share ideas with Bethesda, The Coalition and 343. This way, as modern design enters many genres, we can exchange notes with other designers.” The Coalition is the Gears team, while 343 Industries is the Halo team, and they are both part of Xbox Game Studios, while Bethesda Game Studios is a separate entity in ZeniMax Media (acquired in 2020).

But “at the heart of the inspiration for this game was a love affair with cars based on skill and competition.” That the start of the Builders Cup “is not just a ride in a Corvette. You see the opening video when the Corvette goes by and it bombs down the track, and Corvettes are very fast cars. So you move on, and we wanted the stakes not to be so high. This is not a competition as this would harm accessibility. But it makes you feel like you’re hearing the audio and everything. But it’s intense. It’s much more intense. She’s not that relaxed. That car flies across the track. So it kind of reflects that vision of skill and competition, and then it’s just a matter of using and showcasing all the new technology that we have available for about 15 minutes.”
