We’ve always been great advocates for Cyberpunk 2077 and with patch 2.0, the time has come for everyone to take the plunge and reevaluate this excellent RPG. CD Projekt RED has done a fantastic job of bringing the game closer to the experience everyone had in mind before launch, and technical issues are a thing of the past.
Let’s be clear: It’s still a role-playing game and not the life simulation some might have imagined, but all the quality of life features added over the past two years are almost enough to make Night City feel like a second home. Patch 2.0 is the biggest and most effective update of the bunch, improving core aspects of the game beyond recognition.
The most important change in patch 2.0 is the complete overhaul of talents. While the old system was essentially a series of upgrades one after the other, the new skill trees add game-changing abilities: if you want to build a stealth samurai, that means you can hide and interrupt an enemy’s line of sight, and slow down time when you’re about to be spotted, which gives you a chance to react and block bullets from people’s heads by saying “stop shooting yourself”. For us, we’ve combined this with movement options like air dash and dodge, so fast it feels like teleportation.
GTA style police —
Cyberpunk 2077 already had the best combat system in a first-person RPG, and now it’s even better. We’d even go so far as to say you’ll have to start from scratch, because re-entering an existing character is like receiving the keys to a Lamborghini during a driving test: it might be a bit too much. Nearly all of the talents are significant and can be combined with an entirely new cyberware system designed to complement these skills.
Additionally, patch 2.0 introduces new police AI and a series of desirable levels, culminating in Max Tac’s special forces descending on us if we cause too much chaos in the city.
We’re not at GTA level yet, but now we have something else to worry about as we drive through the streets of Night City in a fully equipped Porsche. If you hit a civilian, someone will call the police, which means you’ll have to run and hide from patrol vehicles that come looking for you.
Cyberpunk 2077 at full strength —
Another big change is drive-by shooting, which is useful if you’re being chased by cops. For example, when using the katana, we often get burned out on a motorcycle and launch ourselves into enemy cars before slashing their tires with the blade as we overtake them. By opting for a netrunner build you can force them to brake and shoot a car at full speed to cause a crash, Watch Dogs style.
There are also easier ways to deal with other vehicles: weapons. By default the game locks enemy vehicles right in the middle and shoots you with the right dorsal, but you can also aim manually to explode tires and heads, and then there’s a whole host of armed vehicles that give you access to greater firepower on the move . Performing a burnout while spitting lead from the machine guns out front is almost as much fun as smashing a motorcycle with an armored car. Almost.
If you’ve been waiting for CD Projekt to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to its full potential and turn it into one of the best RPGs, come visit us on September 27, when patch 2.0 arrives a few days before Phantom Liberty.
