CS:GO is dead, long live Counter-Strike 2!

After six months of testing, Valve studio closed without many words has released Counter-Strike 2, a free upgrade of the multiplayer shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) to a version powered by the Source 2 engine.

Like CS:GO, Counter-Strike 2 is distributed via a shareware model and is available on the former Steam page at the old address. The release took place in the last minutes of September 27 (as expected) Moscow time.

Valve calls Counter-Strike 2 a new phase and “the biggest technical leap” in the history of the famous series, bringing new features and content to the game for years to come.

Counter-Strike 2 modernizes the classic game with realistic and physically-based graphics, state-of-the-art networking, and enhanced community workshop tools.

In addition to the classic gameplay, Counter-Strike 2 offers:

  • updated rating system and prime mode;
  • global and regional rankings;
  • improved and remade maps from the ground up;
  • fundamentally new dynamic smoke from grenades;
  • subcharacter structure;
  • redesigned visual and sound effects;
  • all CS:GO inventory items.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive debuted on August 21, 2012, and until the release of CS2 it remained extremely popular – in the last 24 hours it peaked online on Steam at 1.2 million people (1.8 million remained the record).
