Just yesterday (Monday the 13th) the Digital Foundry channel published a video of almost half an hour doing a technical analysis of Forspoken on PlayStation 5, evaluating what the game does well and what it doesn’t do on the next generation console. showing that sometimes the game’s internal resolution can drop as low as 720p to be rebuilt by FSR 2.1.

Forspoken has several quality modes, Quality mode, ray tracing mode or performance mode, as well as its variations for 120Hz screens. All of these modes feature dynamic resolution scaling as of FSR 2.1, with the quality modes targeting a 2160p display and the performance mode targeting 1440p. However, the channel ended up finding it more appropriate to play in Ray Traced mode at 40fps, especially with a VRR display.

The original resolution, however, can be very low, since the The minimum configured for each mode is 50% of the pixels for each axis of the screen. This means that performance mode can go up to 720p internally, while the other two modes scale down to resolutions closer to 1080p.

Performance is also not always stable at frame rate targets. In some places basically all modes have frame drops, with quality mode reaching drops up to 20 fps.

The game has been the subject of a lot of discussion, and Digital Foundry has done a good job of highlighting the best qualities and worst flaws of the software. Among the positive points, the video highlights the loading time that can last less than a second, the open world that is quite extensive, the animation work that is very fluid and the character models (but not the textures on the models). ). ).

Among the visual issues highlighted by the review, what stood out the most was the lighting quality, especially the implementation of ambient occlusion, which is very weird and leaves assets with an almost identical default “brightness”, even at points where there is not much Turning on.

“The ambient occlusion used in Forspoken really confuses me. It’s FidelityFX AO on the surface, but the results are much less visually pleasing than what was offered in FF15.”
