A document sent by Sony to the UK competition authority revealed that Microsoft currently has 29 million Game Pass subscribers. The Japanese company revealed that PlayStation Plus is experiencing difficulties, while the American company’s subscription service is growing.

Sony said that despite all the transformations it received in June this year, it still hasn’t managed to do enough to keep up with the main competitor.

The information was shared by Sony in an attempt by the company to position itself against the merger between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, which is undergoing an assessment before being finalized. The response to the competition authority is intended to show that the US company already has a considerable advantage in subscription services.

Sony said that despite all the transformations it received in June this year, it still hasn’t managed to do enough to keep up with the main competitor. In a possible merger between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, the company believes that the service would become even more dominant in the market due to titles like Call of Duty.

The numbers are good, but they don’t like Microsoft

In January this year, Microsoft officially revealed the number of Game Pass subscribers. At the time, the company released data showing the subscription service had just over 25 million users. If the numbers published by Sony are correct, there were around four million new subscriptions in the period of less than a year.

Despite all of Sony’s fears regarding the Microsoft service, the North American company itself is not satisfied with the rate at which Game Pass has been growing. In a financial report published last month, they revealed that growth did not meet expectations for what was expected for the year, although it grew by 28%, the target was 73%.

In 2021 alone, Microsoft was able to make $2.9 billion from Game Pass. The value, which corresponds to approximately R$ 15.4 billion at the current exchange rate, represents the highest billing in subscription services. At least that’s what a document presented by the company last month indicates, which shows that PlayStation Plus also has a considerable market share.
